Disability is one of the most overlooked research areas of intersectionality, and ableism is the system of oppression that constructs disabled people as the ‘other’. This existing hierarchy of life dehumanizes and discriminates disabled people all over the world and functions within discourses which legitimize intersectional oppressive structures by reinforcing the existing power relations. Due to the existing intersectional inequalities, many marginalized groups such as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPoC) continue to experience multiple dimensions of exclusion from participation in economic, social, cultural and political processes. Thus, ableism, racism and sexism have been the manifestation of everyday lived realities of much larger structural discriminatory processes for these groups of people.

Within the framework of the project „Ableism Intersectional“, we would like to further the conversation on the complexity of ableist assumptions and discriminatory structures as well as critical intersectionalities for example with racism, sexism etc., as these aspects are al interconnected. The first part is focused on input and reflection, while the second part gives participants the opportunity to actively engage in exchange and discussion. The workshop is open to anyone who is interested in the topics of Anti-Ableism, Anti-Racism and Critical Intersectionalities.

The aims of this two-part workshop are:

  • Discussion on the notions and reproduction mechanisms of Normativity and Normality
  • Understanding institutionalized Structures of Ableism, Racism, Sexism and Intersectionalities
  • Biases and Power Relations in intersectional organizing and communications
  • Knowledge exchange on lived experiences of neoliberal-capitalist challenges with structures of intersectional disparities and discrimination of minoritized groups
